Explainable AI (XAI): Moving from “Black Box” to “Glass Box”
The Transparency Mandate
In high-stakes domains like finance and healthcare, “The AI said so” is no longer an acceptable answer. Explainable AI (XAI) has moved from a technical niche to a legal requirement in 2026 (ResearchGate, 2026). We are moving from “Black Boxes” to “Glass Boxes” where every decision is traceable and fair.
Building Trust through Accountability
XAI seeks to bridge the gap between technical performance and human understanding.
- Local vs. Global Explanations: New tools allow users to see why a specific decision was made for them (local) and how the model generally behaves across all data (global) (DOI, 2026).
- Self-Explaining Agents: The roadmap for 2026–2030 focuses on agents that can verbally explain their reasoning in plain language, making AI more accessible to non-technical stakeholders (ResearchGate, 2026).
